I think that sometimes "fashion bloggers" feel the need to throw on that extra necklace, add one more pattern to the mix, switch out flats for sky high heels, all in the name of the blog. Sometimes it is real life with a twist, other times it is far from reality. We do this to dazzle, to inspire, to get our dang outfit images pinned 1,000 times gosh darn it!

However, I have always aligned my blog as a "personal style" blog. I hope you don't come here to learn about the latest trends, see runways looks recreated, or follow along with my trips to Paris Fashion Week. I am just a girl, trying to get dressed everyday. So, in an attempt to get back into my blogger groove, I am kicking off a new series. For the next couple of weeks I will be documenting my teacher style, creating outfits from what I have deemed my "capsule wardrobe".

I jumped straight from "wear whatever you want" grad school, to a "come to school at 5 am looking stylish and fresh" teaching career, & had to quickly identify the pieces in my closet that were go-getters, the heavy hitters that could pull together an outfit in a snap.

These foundational pieces will be the base of each outfit (here it is the black pants, chambray shirt & puffer vest), but this will not be a strict limited wardrobe series like the 30 for 30 (see my 2 attempts at the challenge here & here). It is my hope that you can see how a closet full of basics is easily spiced up with accessories (this scarf, shoes of your choice), to stylishly clothe you for any occasion.
What is your dress code at work?
Do you have a capsule wardrobe for work? Or is your entire closet mixed use?

  1. I can already tell I'm going to love this series. I'm working on my teaching license right now, and I already have my eye out for basics to wear when I'm teaching. What are your favorites flats to wear?

  3. I'm doing a capsule series myself and often feel like my outfits aren't fun or dazzling enough. But you're right, we are dressing for real life! Love this look!

  5. I agree! I don't understand the excitement of "Your Next Winter Coat For Under $500!" *GASP* I need a coat for under $50, please. I've always thought your style was effortless and classic, and that's what many women should strive for. Keep up the awesome posts!

  7. I'm so excited for this series. I've been thinking of doing the 30x30 again in order to force myself out of this slump - but didn't want to commit to 30 outfits (again)

  10. I love this outfit! I just started a new job, and luckily I can pretty much wear whatever I want, so I don't have to overhaul my wardrobe completely. I'm hoping to add in more professional pieces the more I shop though!

  11. I couldn't agree more about adding an extra layer, or thinking that jeans and a t-shirt aren't "good enough" for a blog post, but like you I've gotten myself into a better groove and am sticking to personal style.

  16. You always seem to wear high heels for teaching, and I never know how you do it. I envy the ability. It's great to see some looks with flatsI Especially a look so cute. One I could see any one of the teachers (the female ones, of course) in my building wearing. I have been teaching for 9 years, and, if I wear heels, they better feel like clouds on my feet, or out with the donation bags they go.

  17. There is a great Lively Show with Caroline of Un-Fancy talking about how to put together a capsule wardrobe: http://jesslively.com/carolinerector/. I highly recommend checking it out. I don't have a capsule, but I'm going to put one together for fall/winter. I think it will make my life so much easier!

  18. I actually really like the Dansko clogs - they are so supportive and feel like walking on clouds (although, there is a bit of a breaking in process). As far as ballet flats go, I prefer Old Navy. They are going to get torn up anyways, so they better be affordable!

Good luck with your teaching license! It is a very fulfilling career.

  19. Thank you for your super sweet feedback. I agree, the eye candy blogs are fun, but not very relatable to my life.

  20. I hear that, the 30 outfits is a LOT. Not sure how many I will do for this series, at least 20 I'm thinking :)

  21. I have super high arches in my feet, so a full day in flats kills my feet and my lower back. I like to mix in 1 - 2 days of heels, the shorter days when the students leave at 3, and that way I can balance it out without killing my feet or my back.

I hear you about weeding out the uncomfortable shoes - regretting many of my cheap shoe purchases of days bygone!

  23. I don't like to read the "bling blogs" anymore because they aren't real life for me. Its great that they can afford (or are gifted) bags that are worth thousands and such but I like to see how a girl takes what they have and recreate it a few times. This is the perfect example. Thanks for being you!!
