Summer Bucket List

When I first moved to Nashville for grad school in 2009, many of my first experiences were possible thanks to the great deals I found on Groupon (#GradSchoolBudget) - right off the top of my head I remember concerts, brewery tours, dinners at Nashville restaurants, painting classes & even a crawfish boil. But over time, the Groupon emails made me experience major FOMO because I was too busy to take advantage of the offerings, so I added my Groupon emails to my inbox folder named "Stuff to Buy" (seriously, if you suffer from impulse-buying-itis like me, this is a great way to file all the tempting emails into one location, so when you actually DO need (ok WANT) something, you know where to find all the sweet sales & discount codes!) 

But now that we are thinking about moving to a new town, I cracked open the Groupon deal vault once again & I am blown away by how many new features & categories of deals they have added during my hiatus! If you saw on Snapchat yesterday (@jesshereandnow), we are planning a road trip between Nashville & our next city (currently down to Portland or Denver), & will be taking to the open road with the pugs for at least 1 month! The headache of figuring out where to stay (with dogs!) just got so much easier thanks to Groupon travel deals! I'm dying over this Colorado Springs hotel with views of the mountains close to Pikes Peak, this dog friendly hotel outside Vegas is under $50 a night & they even have bargains on lodging close to Yosemite National Park!

When you think about it, some months have a strong color association - February is red/pink, October totally is orange, and January an icy blue! Whenever I think about March, I think about GREEN! Sunday Shopping: Activewear

Just about every night while we are sitting on the couch, feet up, surrounded by our squishy pugs, Tyler & I talk about how we would like to live a healthier lifestyle - more activity, more green food, more explorations! And then we pick out a show to watch on Netflix and glue ourselves to the couch for the remainder of the evening. We seriously can't be the only ones in this rut! I know that some of it is because we are currently in Winter hibernation mode, but about 90% of it is just pure laziness & resistance to change (AKA why i made it my word for 2016!).

I am finally putting my money where my mouth is & my little family is dedicating ourselves to trying tiny tweaks to increase our activity. Step 1 was of course buying new work out clothes, but we are also going to be sticking to a weekly menu planning with lots of healthy options & committing to 1 new adventure each weekend.

In my quest for cute workout gear, I found some goodies that I couldn't wait to share! I just purchased this pair of leggings, this adorable sports bra & a new pair of Nikes from Kohl's. And am currently making a wish list of everything that has caught my eye at Lolë activewear (spoiler alert: I want everything!).

Sunday Shopping: It Cosmetics

I have blogged about my beauty routine before, & reviewed some favorite makeup lines including Pla beauty, products from my Birchbox subscription & the skin/hair care products that I believe in most.  

This Summer I was introduced to It Cosmetics, & it is currently all I use for makeup products. You can find all of the It Cosmetics products at Ulta, QVC & It Cosmetics online. The thing I like most about It Cosmetics, is how long lasting they are! Using the products below, my makeup stays looking fresh from when I apply it at 5:30 am until I get finished teaching in the afternoon. I also really appreciate how much thought was put into the packaging of the products, everything is easy to use & exactly what I need!

1. Vitality Brightening Anti-Aging Face Disk - my "if you could only have one beauty product for the rest of your life" item is a toss up between concealer & bronzer, & this bronzer disk is certainly an all you need product. The bronzer is the perfect shade for everyday use & the addition of blush + highlighting powder frees up space in my make-up bag.

2. Heavenly Luxe Wand brush - I have never been much of a diva about my brushes, but this one is so dreamy! The softest thing I have ever used, & the perfect pair for the bronzer disk.

3. Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer - The thick past-like consistency of this concealer might appear to be hard to apply at first, but you only need a tiny amount to completely cover your trouble spots. This stuff truly erases any signs of under eye darkness (& sets for all day coverage with the Bye Bye Pores pressed powder, #10 below)

4. Brow Power Eyebrow Pencil - well defined brows are the finishing frame for your face. The brow pencil builds to allow you to fill in a little or a lot, & the combing brush helps to keep everything in place.

5. Hello Light Anti-Aging Luminizing Crème Stick - I like the highlighting powder in the bronzer disk palette, but when I am doing my make up for going out, I like to touch this luminizing stick on my cheekbones, brow bones, & around my eyes for extra pop. The creamy formula goes on smooth & easily blends in for a natural glow.

6. Hello Lashes 5-IN-1 Mascara - Since getting my lash extensions I don't use mascara anymore, however, over the Summer I seriously rocked this mascara. The crazy looking ball on the end helps to get the mascara on every lash, majorly plumping them up!

7. Your Skin But Better CC Cream (with SPF 50+) - I don't wear foundation every day, but when I do want a little extra coverage, this CC Cream is the perfect extra touch. The product actually has a pump top, which helps to keep the mess factor down. I apply it with my fingers & the coverage is medium.

8. No. 50 Serum Anti-Aging Collagen Veil Primer - One of the keys to all day make up? Primer! This is a collagen packed primer that leaves my skin feeling baby soft! (I guess petting my face all day probably doesn't help the make up last!) 

9. Vitality Lip Flush 4-in-1 Reviver Lipstick Stain - I love all of my lipsticks, but sometimes I just want moisturized lips with a little hint of color. This product looks clear, but it brings out a natural flush in your lips, subtly accentuating the natural color, while leaving everything nourished! 

10. Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder - My makeup routine goes like this: Primer, CC Cream, under eye concealer, then a finishing layer of this pressed powder. The powder is totally transparent, not adding any additional color, & locking everything in place.

J.Crew vs. J.Crew Factory

I am old enough to remember when J.Crew Factory stores were just J.Crew outlets, random shops (on our way to the beach each Summer), where you could buy last year's J.Crew cast offs for way cheaper. The outlet idea eventually morphed into a secondary J.Crew line -  J.Crew Factory - offering similar styles, but made mostly in China (vs. Europe as many of their main-line items are made), so that they could sell them at a lower price. The "Factory" concept must have been super successful, because J.Crew expanded the line, opening up brick & mortar stores across the country, & recently launching online sales.

In the beginning, the Factory selection was pretty hit or miss. The styles were technically similar to full price J.Crew offerings, but they still lagged a season or two behind. However, In the last year, I have seen more & more overlap between what is currently offered in J.Crew & J.Crew Factory. I have J.Crew dreams, on a J.Crew Factory & am often on the prowl for look-alike items. As I was shopping the other day I thought it would be fun to share the pieces that are most similar between the two stores.

Last weekend I had a lovely night sipping bourbon drinks, chowing down on straight off the pig BBQ from Martin's BBQ Joint & shopping wares from local artisans & creatives at the Made South Market. There were so many amazing vendors that I just had to share them with you! These unique picks make great Christmas gifts - not to scare you, but we are only a little over 3 months out!

Sunday Shopping: FashionABLE

In the past 6 years, the fashion scene here in Nashville has drastically changed, & I am amazed by some of the artists + businesses emerging not only on the local, but also the global stage in an incredible way. Two local businesses that I have had the pleasure of working with before* have recently joined forces, so that fashionABLE is now able to employ women who have overcome challenges - women from Nashville, & Africa.

Sunday Shopping: Ten Thousand Villages

It was my great pleasure to visit the local Nashville Ten Thousand Villages store & share their story on the blog (see the full post here), & I honestly can't stop thinking about this amazing company & the wide umbrella of artisans that they work with in 38 countries.

I am blown away by the fact that Ten Thousand Villages stores are mostly staffed by unpaid volunteers so that the artisans can earn a fair wage, while still having their products sold at a reasonable price.

Looking over the Ten Thousand Villages website brings tears to my eyes, as each product has a description of how it was made (many by 100% recycled or sustainable materials), & a note about the group of artisans that make them. Some are citizens disabled by the raging wars in their countries. Others are women who escaped sex trafficking. And many many more are men & women who are using their traditional trades to make a new life for themselves, their children, & their communities.

Often times ease of access & a high sticker price keeps me from purchasing fair trade, sustainably made products, but now that I have found Ten Thousand Villages (both online, and locally at my Nashville store), my excuses have been erased. Next time you are looking for a gift, or to add an unique piece to your home, please check out these amazing items & think about what you are actually buying!

Happy Father's Day! Happy first day of Summer!

I am back in Nashville for a short stint, & looking forward to pool-side lounging before picking up travel again. Ty & I will be spending 4th of July with my family on the lake & I already have my stars & stripes bikini ready (Ty has a pretty sweet tee too!). a year later: the best wedding gifts

Now that we have been married over a year, we have really had the chance to enjoy all of our wedding gifts. We were so blessed to have family travel from all corners of the US that the wedding gifts were truly not necessary, but they sure have made married life fun! We lived together for 2 years before we officially tied the knot, so I think we did a pretty decent job making our wedding registry more needs than wants, identifying things that we had found lacking in our home life on a weekly if not daily basis. The lady at Bed, Bath & Beyond kept trying to make us add more items to our list (something about needing 2 times the number of gifts for the number of people on the guest list), but we stuck with things that we really really were going to use, & not just pretty things to sit around & get dusty.

Inevitably people did go off of the registry list, but these were mostly people who knew us very well, & gifted us personalized items like restaurant gift cards to our favorite local places, bar cart accessories because they knew our love of adult beverages, or monogrammed items with our last name. Additionally, Tyler's parents very generously gifted us a honeymoon package to an all inclusive resort in Antigua. But if you know that this is not being provided, this is also a category that many couples enjoy being gifted. Below are the 10 products we have enjoyed the most over the last year, but that might not be on everyone's registry list:

1. I grew up making rice in a pot on the stove, but Ty was the one that pushed to have a rice cooker on our registry & it has changed my life. This one is so easy & even has a tray to steam veggies too! 

2. This was probably our #1 want/need item! All of our knives were hand-me-downs that were basically worthless! Having a quality knife set will make cooking fun again! 

3. I don't think a waffle maker was on our registry list (?), but I am so glad that we were gifted it! Armed with my great-grandmother's waffle recipe, many many weekend mornings have been waffle mornings! This one is so easy & delivers a perfectly crispy/fluffy waffle every time!

4. If you know the couple isn't being gifted a complete honeymoon, there are many modern registry lists that allow you to purchase a portion of the trip (massage, dinner, room service, bottle of bubbly) for the newlyweds. 

5. We love our bar cart so we were so excited to get beautiful accessories to put on display. If you know a specific household area that your couple enjoys, this is a great place to go off registry (coffee connoisseurs? cheese aficionados? homemade ice cream junkies?). We were gifted this classy wine decanter, gorgeous gold accented bottle & the adorable Kate Spade "his & hers" rocks glasses that we use all the time!

6. Along with the knife set, the cutting board is also a heavily used item in our house. The solid wood is beautiful enough to stay out all the time, & we certainly use it almost every day!

7. Good pillows are things that people don't often think about asking for, but they make all the difference. Maybe this makes me an old person, but I am very particular about my pillows & it is so nice to lie my head down on pillowy goodness each night. 

8. If you know your couple frequents a particular restaurant, or has had a certain place on their restaurant bucket list for a while, you can easily call the establishment & either get a physical gift card or set up a credit for them there.

9. Oh, the olive oil sprayer! This is a low cost item that blew my mind. Instead of using spray on your pots & pans that is filled with chemicals, you can just fill these up with the oil of your choice! Healthy & more affordable!

10. Maybe this is the Southerner in me, but I love our deep fryer. This one is no mess, no fuss! Ty loves making panko-breaded chicken tenders in them & I love to eat them!

Sunday Shopping: Essence Cosmetics

I have enjoyed testing out some amazing products from Essence Cosmetics over the weekend. I loved what I tried, so I went online to learn more about the brand & was shocked at the prices. All of these amazing products below are under $5! After using them, I had no idea that quality like this was possible at prices like that! The lipstick is very moisturizing & long-lasting, while the bronzer smells amazing (I didn't know that was even a thing!!). I am still a bit of an eyeshadow newbie, so I'm hopeful that the nude eye palette will help me try out the fun colors available for Summer!
