Say Yes To Easy Holiday Travel

Hi, my name is Jessica & I'm a recovering over packer. In the past I thought it was my duty to bring e-v-e-r-y-thing that anyone might have forgotten on a trip. My bags were always stuffed to the gills, crazy heavy, & nearly impossible to find a single thing in (but it was all there… somewhere!). Now I have learned that I can travel prepared, but in a more streamlined fashion. So let me share some of my secrets!
The categories of things in my bag: entertainment, comfort, logistics, & things to make me look good when I arrive. See how they play into my travel plans below:

{1.} To look like less of a hoarder when checking my luggage, I wear my bulkiest shoes. And then once seated immediately change into comfy flats (these "flats to go" from Kushyfoot are small enough to pack into purses too.)
sunglasses, necklace ℅ Yuni Kelley, lipstick, wallet, flats ℅ Kushyfoot

{2.} I am cold, like always. I use my leopard print scarf from J.Crew like a normal person while on the streets, but once in transit, I wrap it around my head like I'm trying to mummify. I fall asleep 0.2 seconds after take off. And I wonder why I never get to experience airplane peanuts. (currently crushing on this scarf)
{3.} The entertainment - I always bring it, I rarely ever use it (see point #2 above about sleeping) - but if for some reason I couldn't fall asleep & didn't have my iPhone, lap top, notebook & favorite magazine… it. would. suck.
{4.} Don't wear makeup on airplanes. Seriously that is like wearing a full face of foundation to the gym. I judge you for that.

{5.} Instead plan ahead for your baggie of 3 oz goodies accordingly. While you are waiting on your bags at the carousel, slip into the bathroom & do this:
Wipe off the grime with towelettes, then add a swipe of lipstickconcealer & mascara. The hair gets tousled with a spray of thisIf all else fails, wrap scarf around neck & place sunglasses on puffy, un-mascara-ed eyes… instant movie star!

How are you saying YES to comfort & ease during this busy time of the year?

  1. I am a total over packer too! My carry on is always overstuffed. My biggest fix was getting all my magazines on my iPad!

  2. I was an overpacker, too! And then I moved 500 miles from home and got reeeally good at packing. And then I started blogging and regressed and now I overpack again (mostly because of shoes). I need to work on this, and these are great tips (though usually my carry on is perfectly packed...).

That said, do you like the B&B spray? I am wondering if it would help perk up my roots, as they are the only part of my hair that doesn't have body (grr).

  3. I'm totally with you for each of these tips! I hate wearing makeup on planes cause then I can't rub my eyes on long flights. I usually slip out to the bathroom and freshen up too, or just add a little something at my seat if I don't have any neighbours. Isn't the BB dry shampoo an aerosol though? I can never take mine in my luggage, far less with my carry-on.

  5. These are great tips! I recently posted about how to pack for a NYC weekend. I've had to condense how much I've packed in the past and it's really taught me to bring things I'll only actually need or use.

  7. I am no TSA expert, but in my experience personal toiletry aerosols are a-ok. I even managed to get this bad boy on the plane over the summer, despite it being 4 oz. I quickly scanned the TSA prohibited items list this morning, and didn't see hairspray listed. Maybe Nashville is just a little bit more lax than other places…

  8. I love the B&B spray, gives my hair the volume I want with out making it feel dirty. I will say that I touch my hair a LOT throughout the day, so the volume doesn't last all day… but for me it's perfect for some afternoon lift or a bit of bounce before going out.

  9. I used to over pack too, until I studied abroad and starting traveling internationally. There is nothing worse than dragging around heavy bags while catching two hour flights, train rides or subways to travel. It turned me into a light packer and actually I GET way more use out of what I pack now than I used to! Love this post!

  10. This is so perfect. Does everything fit in that bag? And if so, where can I get said bag?

  11. These are all great tips! Except I wear makeup on airplanes. Unfortunately, I don't have nice skin, so I have to wear foundation/concealer to cover up scarring & blemishes and to even out my skin tone.

  13. It's really just the glamazons that wear a full face of make-up & eyeshadow, and clumps of mascara. Sitting in a stale cabin of recycled air is gross enough when I think about it, so I try to just put a nice layer of moisturizer on my face to help. Maybe it is nicer in 1st class… looking forward to experiencing that for the first time when we fly for our honeymoon!

  14. Oh yes everything fits into this bag, it is my go-to carry on now. It was in the Philip Lim for Target collection & I stayed up stalking it online until 3am in order to make it mine - so worth it! It is now sold out in Targets, but I bet you could find it on Poshmark or eBay!
