is simplicity ignorance or bliss?

I have gotten a couple of comments lately about my "simple" style/outfits... and I honestly don't know whether to take it as an insult or a compliment. When I get dressed - I strive for a combination of covering my top & bottom, adding shoes, and finishing it off with jewelry. Sometimes when I want to take it to the next level, I might even add a hat/belt/scarf or all three (look at me, cah-razy!)
{ What I Wore: StyleMint dress // J.Crew chambray button down // Nine West sandals (similar) // brown belt (similar) }
But isn't that all that you can really have on at once... what am I missing?
And if you expect me to be wearing jackets in this moist mid-August heat... well then we do know who the crazy one is...

What is your simple go-to outfit?
How do you take basics to the next level?

  1. Take the comments as a compliment....insults are usually a matter of being jealous. They wish they were as effortlessly stylish as you are! Simple to me, means effortless fabulous-ness, and that is the ultimate fashion compliment. I totally loove this dress with the chambray! It is unique and super stylish! You aren't missing a thing! It seems like my life revolves around dressing up basics! www.embellishconsignment.com/blog is proof!

  2. Jessica, this outfit is SO stinkin' cute and how cute is your dog?! :)  I think layers and accessories, whether a belt, statement necklace or dangle earrings are the best way to take an outfit to the next level! But having simple style is a complete compliment! If you look chic and fabulous when you throw on the minimal amount, how much better could it get?! Anyway, love this look!

  3. It's funny because I feel like I have been dressing very simply as well - maybe it's an end of summer thing? I sort of love it.

  4. I think simple is a good thing. I find myself dressing more simply in the summertime--it's too hot for fussy outfits! Your outfit today is a great example of how to look chic without too much fuss. The details (like how you knotted that shirt and those cool sandals) make it so much fun!

  6. I'd take it as a compliment! Sometimes simple outfits are the chicest. I also  think simple dressing happens a lot in the summer because it's way too hot to layer! Your red dress is so pretty with that asymetrical hem :)

  8. I say it's a compliment! Your outfits are great, that's why we read! I think that simplicity in the summer is key and usually shows that you don't need a lot of extra stuff to dress well :)

  11. Compliment for sure :) I tend to prefer simple items in my closet, but with one killer detail that makes it stand apart from a truly basic item, like leather sleeves on a grey tee, pretty lace insets on a simple dress, or a unique cut to a classic trench coat. The Australian store Esther.com.au has awesome examples of this...I want everything there!! :)

  13. I think "simple" is definitely a compliment. When I think of simple, I think of relatable, effortless, and chic.  Which today's outfit is all three of those. I've had people describe my style as "simple" too, and I've learned to think about that as a good thing. :) Love the red dress and chambray combination - so perfect for late summer!

  14. I think I'd use the word "uncomplicated" to describe your style, and most definitely mean that as a compliment! Less is definitely more, especially when it's so hot and humid, and you always look chic and polished without piling on a ton of "stuff". Keep it up, friend!

  15. I love that dress. The hem is awesome. I think simple go-to outfits are the best. Mine is jeans and a v-neck tee with a long necklace. I also love a good dress that is cute and easy to throw on. I guess I just start layering to take things up to the next level, which admittedly is pretty hard to do in the summer :)

  17. I guess accessories are what makes simple outfits interesting! For me, I love belts, chunky necklaces and light scarves in summer :)

  19. I'm personally a fan of simple outfits. My go to for summer is a simple dress and a cardigan in case in get cold in the A/C, with very little jewelry.
The outfit you're wearing is perfect for summer, cute as casual as it should be.
Don't worry about others judging your style, dress to keep yourself happy.

  21. I love your outfit! That dress is so pretty. As for simplicity, I always wear SUPER SIMPLE outfits during the summer and get a little more layered (as we all do) during the fall/winter when it gets colder. Simple is  a good thing! I agree with Sarah Edwards, simple often looks effortless. Great topic ;)

  22. I think simple is best. It will look polished and put together and you can always add a great pair of heels if you need to step up to the next level.

this red dress is already doing a lot just on its own, it doesn't need a ton of styling!

  23. I'd say Sydney of the Daybook has simple style too - I think it's all about accessibility and making it look effortless!

  24. I wouldn't take that as an insult...you always look so darn cute! And having style/a style blog does NOT mean you always have to dress in 55 layers or pile on loads of jewelry. Anyway, I say keep doin' what you're doin' cause I love it :)

  26. I think your style is great! When it's so hot out you kind of have to go with simple or you'd be dying in the heat. Simple is a good thing in my book :)

  28. Hmm. I just had a post about simple outfits and needing everything to be super special and blog worthy. Truth is girl, we have real lives, and real jobs, and can't always be dressed to the nines....and that's okay. And it's okay to blog about days like that since sometimes we need a reminder that not every moment of life is pinterest worthy.
