hard to say goodbye

Well, the time has come. My favorite summer sandals are no longer appropriate for wear outside the house... I have officially loved them to death! At least they got a send off in style - walking around for hours in Nice, France wore the soles right down to the nub (not even salvageable by the cobbler I'm afraid).
This is something that I constantly struggle with - getting rid of a much loved item from my closet. Even though the item is no longer useful, it was once loved and holds sentimental value. I worry that if I toss it, I will miss it, but keeping it around means that I will just be tempted to wear it. One of those times that I wish I had had the foresight to have bought multiples! But, this is all part of the evolution and refinement of my closet.... or at least what I keep telling myself to make the parting easier.

How do you go about exfoliating the items in your closet that are no longer in use, flattering, or treasured?
Do you keep around items for sentimental value only?
Or is parting such sweet sorrow... only to be healed by the hunt of an equally fabulous piece?

  1. I know the feeling! I actually have a pile of items that have definitely seen better days with the sole purpose of having them fixed. Now....most of the things in that pile have been there for months, if not years. I'll get around to it...some day. But typically, when I have things in my closet that I just don't wear like...ever...but hold onto because of sentimental value I give them to friends! That way, I can always "reshop" my old stuff if I miss it :)

  2. I understand the feeling! I recently lost  a pair of sandals.  I miss them, they were perfect.  I tried buy something else, but it's not them same.

  3. When I spent a year living out of a backpack, I realized the value of paring down my wardrobe. I actually really like cleaning out my closet, and I just think of it as making room for more fabulous things that I'll like even more. I'm doing a closet cleanout this week in fact! I'll be making room for my San Francisco purchases next month!

  6. I'm really bad about waiting until I find something to replace what I need to throw away before I do. Zoey chewed up a pair of my favorite nude pumps and I couldn't bear to toss them until I'd found a proper replacement. It's a problem!

  7. Aw poor sandals!! I hate wearing things out. Every now and then I go through my closet and edit out the pieces I'm no longer wearing/using. Then I donate everything to Goodwill. Usually I find that I don't miss those pieces even though I was keeping them to wear for 'just the right' occasion/outfit. Getting rid of things isn't that hard, but wearing things out is so sad, because it's something you've worn a ton and loved. I hope you're able to find a new pair of shoes the love for the fall :)

  8. I had a pair of black leather flats with a big bow on them that I literally wore to death and they aren't fit for outside wear anymore but I think they're still around here something - I can't give them up and it's been near impossible to find replacements that I love and are as comfy - so I totally get what you mean!

  9. Ohhh gosh- that's the worst! I think you buy an equally as fabulous piece! The only shoes I've ever held on to sentimental value are my frye boots. I worn them through Oscar de la Renta's studio for work, had them on when I got engaged, and many many other fabulous things so they are out in my home, somewhat as a talking piece I guess! But if we saved everything..... I'd be a junk yard haha!

  10. I wait until I find a new item to replace it with and then throw it in the trash.

  11. Cut the bows off and use them for something! That is bows right? If not then oops :) I am sort of blind. But I love to recycle parts of things I love that have bit the dust & you could totally put them onto some flats or use one on a belt or a purse. That way your favorite shoes arent really gone & you can spice up something plain :)

  13. That Zoey! Thank goodness Doug never showed interest in shoe chewing... if he did, I might have to send him to live with a nice family in the country... if you catch my drift! haha
