#Snowtorious

While at home in Arkansas over the holidays, we had a Christmas miracle - a White Christmas. Since the start of Google-able weather documentation in 1875 until now, there have been only 12 White Arkansas Christmases (I just looked this up!), none of which occurred during my previous 24 Christmases... so it was a good & bad surprise. My childhood dreams of waking up to a blanket of snow came true... certainly good. Bad because Arkansas doesn't typically get cold until late January, & my shoe choices reflected this assumption (in my defense, those open toe T-straps sure are cute!)... so thank goodness for borrowed rain boots!
Christmas morning started with rain, which turned to slush, to sleet, then to heavy snow that fell all day, & into the night, earning this storm several Twitter monikers (including my favorites #SnowtoriousLIT (for Little Rock, our capitol city) & #mistlesnow). Our family enjoys opening presents in all our unshowered-matching-PJs glory well into the afternoon, so when the power went off on Christmas day around 1pm, we were all greasy, unfed, & hopeful that it would quickly return.
Pretty sure those are tiny fox prints on our snow covered dock
Quickly return, the power did not. However, our family & the neighbors (who just happen to be my high school BFF & second family) gathered around the roaring fire, turned on the kerosene lanterns, uncorked the wine & went to bed warm from laughter with hopes of lights turning on in the middle of the night...
Did the lights return that night... NOPE! So the next morning I cancelled my plans to return to Nashville, piled in the truck with my family (only took two of us to boost my 87 year old grandmother into the cab!), & headed out for food (& a place to charge my phone!).

The roads were SCARY! Beyond covvvvvered in ice, snow, abandoned cars, & downed trees - our truck added to the path many before it had created (as I'm pretty sure my small town owns NO snow plows, unless you count the trucks with bulldozer shovels attached to the front!!)

After stuffing my belly with chicken tenders & charging my phone (gotta have that battery life to fuel my Instagram addiction!) we returned home to stoke the fire & prepare for another evening in the dark.

At dusk, my friend/neighbor Molly & I took our furbabies (her corgi Cully was #28 of the 40 most influential corgis of 2012! boo yea!) out for a photoshoot in the winter wonderland. I about died of cute & cold at the same time!
Luckily the power returned the second night (after eating the sweet neighbors' delish fireplace chili!), & I now officially have my snow fix for the entire year!

What are your feelings on snow?
Have you experienced a White Christmas in your life? (A crazy question for you Northeasterners... stop laughing at me!)

  1. Ugh that stinks that the power went out! After having no power for 4 days during Hurricane Sandy, I think I'm traumatized, haha. The photos of Doug in his parka are soo cute!

I've gotten white Christmases before but it doesn't happen as often as you think. We usually get most of our snow during Jan/Feb rather than Dec. It's barely snowed this year and I will be happy if it stays that way!

  3. I love big snow storms! They're obviously better when you don't lose power and can stay in, but it sounds like you made the best of it! Those photos of the dogs are great! I have a corgi mix so I'm totally heading over to that link right now :)

  4. We drove from Tulsa to Conway Christmas Day--it was scary seeing all the trucks that had run off the road. And then we started worrying that we wouldn't have power when we got home! Thankfully, our power never did go out, but it seemed MUCH worse down south from us. Sounds like your family made the best of it, though!

  5. Such beautiful photos of the snow! I can't remember the last time I experienced a white Christmas. The bad thing about snow in the South is no one is prepared for it, and it often includes ice since it's too warm to stay snow! Glad you were able to spend some extra time with your family, safe and sound.

  6. I like snow when it doesn't affect my driving!

  7. I didn't bring home snow-appropriate footwear over Christmas, either! It's cold in DC, but it doesn't snow that much so I don't have real-New England-winter anything. And of course it snowed like 8 inches. And of course on a night when I HAD to be out....

  9. Laura,
I heard that OK got a lot of snow too, so I am glad to hear that you made it home in one piece after that scary drive. I went to college in Conway (Hendrix), and that town will always have a special piece of my heart... although it has changed so much even in just the 4 years since I last lived there!

  13. Snow is so pretty when it first falls... but then it just hangs around for days looking all grey and gross. I guess I'm 50/50 on it!

  14. That's amazing! My aunt, uncle and cousins live in Springdale, Arkansas and I only remember one white winter when we went to visit. SO pretty amazing indeed! Love the dog date out in the snow :) What a cute Corgi, I tried to convince the bf this is the next dog we need... he said no. Drats. Also, do I spot an Australian Shepherd in the bottom middle picture? I'm kind of obsessed with the breed after getting my pup :)

  15. Yes my parents have always had large outside dogs, including the most recent cuties Zada the Aussie, and Roxi, the Airedale terrier - both are the most loving dogs! Zada was ga-ga for chasing Doug around in the snow... it was only up to her ankles while poor Doug had it up to his armpits! ha

  16. Oh cute! :) See now an Airedale is what my bf REALLY wants because his old neighbor had one named Nala, and she was cute :)  Glad to know they are loving.

Haha! I can only picture a full size Aussie chasing around a Pug in the snow! Poor Doug :) My Emma would have done the same thing, but since she's a miniature Aussie, she would have been at the same level as Doug :)

  20. One of my BBFs from college lives in Little Rock so I heard all about the snowtorious! So crazy! Although it definitely makes for beautiful pictures!

And PS, not a crazy question for this fellow southern gal. We had a white Christmas here in Houston in 2004! It was total bananas.

  21. I LOVE SNOW!!! I am from NY originally so snow is part of my DNA. There have been a small handfull of years that I have NOT had a white Christmas, and I always pout about it. This year we had lots of beautiful snow and it was heavenly! I'm glad you were able to make the most of it with your family and friends!
