farm fresh

I love fresh vegetables, and like to pretend that I am a locavore... but am pretty lazy when it comes to actually procuring local, fresh food... sad I know. But that is why I joined a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, that delivers a bounty of freshly picked, right down the street local, veggies to my work place farmer's market... easy peasy
My farm, Bells Bend, is AWESOME... and before you start thinking, oh sure... she lives in Tennessee, there must be hundreds of farms close to her, but NONE in my 'hood... check out this site, Local Harvest and then we will talk...
By paying for a "share" of the farm's harvest at the beginning of the season, I help support my local farm, and in exchange I get a delivery from the farm every week from May to December. This is my second year participating, and I can't wait to show you more about my harvest as the weeks go by.
Have you ever participated in a CSA?
How do you get fresh veggies? Hopped on the locavore train yet?

  3. Yay for CSAs!  We have done them in the past and this year we are trying a new (to us) farm... it starts tomorrow... can't wait for the first pick up!

  4. I totally understand... I make a point of coming right home with my produce delivery and sort through what I got... things like carrots/radishes/potatoes get cleaned off and stored for easy use. I immediately divide any greens/lettuce/arugula into individual portions for salads or sides when cooking. If things are easy to be seen, and clean and ready for me I am more likely to eat them each week before they go bad!
    Good luck

  6. Oh so much fun! I really have a blast thinking up new ways to cook beets and turnips and things... items I would have never gotten before... but they are so fresh and delish from the farm!

  7. This is such a great idea!  A couple co-workers of mine participate in one but they seemed to always get a ton of one thing (usually zucchini) & not much else.  I wish it was more practical for the Hubs & me.  Way to support your local farms though! :o)

  13. That's SO great that you joined a CSA! I consider myself a locavore but I'm way too picky to sign up, I'd be afraid too many veggies would go to waste. A friend of mine does it and she loves it because it makes her try out new recipes and learn new foods, but I'm not the chef in my family and he doesn't really do veggies...! Can't wait to hear more about your adventures in food!

  14. Ours is pretty good about giving a variety in our baskets each week... but seriously I don't even know what to do with 1 beet, much less 5! haha
