You like the look of a dress shirt under a sweater but find lumpy every time you try to pull it off?
John and Sherry from Young House Love might use this term as it applies to spray paint, but I think it is equally applicable to Fall dressing: thin & even layers.
If the bottom layer is fitted, then the layers on top will be less bulk, more cute.
So a boxy chambray shirt + thick wool sweater = bulky, boxy mess

My go-to is a light silk button-down + a thinner wool sweater...
Even better is a colorful base with a patterned outer layer
How do you like to layer for Fall?
I have this dot sweater, too! I'm definitely going to layer a button down under it next time I wear it!

I love your layers! I'm busty so I rarely like myself in the collared shirt and sweater combo- but maybe if I try thin layers, like you did, I would like it more!
ReplyDeleteLove these layers! This is a perfect fall outfit:)
ReplyDeleteBelts are my favorite way to reign in layers too - might be just the trick for you!

love it!! i wore a similar outfit this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love this cute layered look--that dotted sweater is such a fun piece! It's sometimes hard to layer without bulkiness, but I agree that it's all about proportion!
ReplyDeletehow cute are you? love that polkadot sweater!

This outfit is super cute! :) I love your sweater, makes me want to go buy it tonight when I work. I need more cords too! Yeah I totally get what you are saying about heavy layers! I feel like I can not move sometimes. Blah! I like this idea of using a lighter layer on underneath! thanks!

LOVE the purple under the dots! This is one of my fave ways to layer too. I hate having buttons or whatever else sticking out underneath my top layer! I also have trouble with a pattern showing through the top layer - like layering a navy gingham under a white sweater or something. I'm never sure if it's tacky that you can see the pattern underneath. What do you think on this?
ReplyDeleteLove the blouse under your polka dot sweater! Such a rich, beautiful color :)
ReplyDeleteFun look!

I love layering, but agree it can look bulky. I def tend to wear lighter/thinner tops under my sweaters. Cute as ever!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love layering! It's practically a necessary art form here! I agree - thinner is better.
ReplyDeletelovely sweater :)

Thanks lady! I am to the point where I had better start doing new things with my hair, or I will be tempted to chop it all off!

Thank you! I was just pinning a couple of cobalt + grey looks today on Pinterest too... guess I have developed a minor crush! Love this combo for Fall!

I agree - I dislike when I have button bumps popping out along the middle of my top sweater... no bueno.
ReplyDeleteThe other question is more of a case-by-case issue... I think it can look cute in many cases, but maybe making the contrast less harsh with another pale color besides white might help :)
xx
That sweater is so cute, love how you layered it!
ReplyDeleteI love your sweater!! The combo with the purple is so awesome!! I love this look!!

You look fantastic! I love all of the layers :)
ReplyDeleteYou look adorable - see, this is what i mean about effortless layering! But you are right...chambray doesn't really layer well for me so I'll have to try the thinner shirts.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, stop being so cute, you're making the rest of us look bad!
Lovely outfit! Adoring dots x
